This DIY took me three (!!!) days to complete and I’m so happy with how it transformed this room! Keep reading for the full tutorial.
MATERIALS:
- 1×5 horizontal (top is ~57” off the floor)
- 1×4 verticals spaced ~24ish inches (plus or minus to avoid outlets)
- Cove moulding on top of the baseboard (looks so good!)
- Paintable Caulk
- Wallpaper (optional!)
TOOLS:
THE PROCESS:
1. Install cove moulding if your 1x’s are thicker than your baseboard. I promise this is the best solution!
2. Start with a 1×4 vertical in one corner. Then use a laser level to get your 1×5 horizontal level and nail it in with an 18 gauge brad nailer.
3. Install 1×4 verticals. Warning! Floors and walls may not be level. Make each vertical cut as you go across the room.
Tip: Use inchcalculator.com to help you determine approximate spacing (so helpful!) Spacing doesn’t have to be perfect – you can adjust it to avoid outlets.
4. Caulk all your seams & nail holes – warning this will take an actual year to complete 😂 Wipe caulk with baby wipes, and once it’s dry… PAINT!
Note: I used a 2″ angle brush on the joints, a foam roller on the 1x boards, and a typically wall roller on the walls. Three different painting methods, but I think it’s worth it! Paint color is Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore, my favorite white!
5. Install wallpaper if your heart desires!
Total Cost:
- 1×4’s: $48.75
- 1×5’s: $52.20
- Cove moulding: $50
- Wallpaper: $1,000
Grand Total: $1150
