For the longest time our dining room shiplap wall has just been a “catch all” wall with plastic shelves from Home Depot and pretty much anything we could fit on those shelves haha. I have been wanting a cute farmhouse style buffet table centered on that wall for the LONGEST time, but I never found “the one.” Finally (after doing my research on Pinterest!) I decided to just make my own plans in AutoCAD and build my own farmhouse buffet table! I mean, why not?!
The overall dimensions are about 36″ high, 64″ wide, and 16.5″ deep. You can tweak the plans to make it fit your space! Scroll down to the bottom of the post to access the plans.
Initially, we cut the wood so that it would be 42″ high. We constructed the top shelf first, and then attached the legs so we could see how 42″ felt in the space. As soon as we stood it right side up, I knew it was too tall! We chopped 6″ off each leg and spaced the bottom two shelves at 13″ apart, and it felt perfect.
It’s important to check all your dimensions before constructing the entire piece. You know what they say, measure twice, cut once!
I am still in the process of decorating the buffet table, but I thought I’d go ahead and share the process of building the table! It took me about a week to complete. I probably spent about 14 hours on it total!
What you’ll need:
- standard white wood
- Early American wood stain
- table saw
- electric hand sander
- 60 grit sanding sheets
- work gloves
- a box of black 2.5″ screws
- impact drill
The process:
STEP 1 – Cut the wood to size
STEP 2 – Sand the wood down to eliminate splinters prep for staining
STEP 3 – Wipe the wood down to get rid of any leftover saw dust and apply stain with rag.
STEP 4 – Lay out your wood (shown below) to verify every piece fits together
STEP 5 – Use screws to build the top, middle, and bottom shelves
STEP 6 – Attach legs by toe-nailing screws at 30* angle from leg into table top
STEP 7 – Turn table onto side, place middle shelf, and measure to ensure it’s at the right height. Fasten one screw in one leg. Since only one screw is installed, the shelf can still rotate and be leveled. While table is on its side, move to opposite leg, measure to ensure the shelf is level, and place screw.
STEP 8 – Flip table over and repeat on opposite legs.
STEP 9 – Repeat steps 7 & 8 for bottom shelf
STEP 10 – Check levelness of table and cut legs as required with a handheld circular saw. Be sure to to tape off the cutting point with painter’s tape to eliminate splintering if cutting is necessary.. it was for us!
STEP 11 – Sand and stain any remaining areas that need attention and fill in screw holes with stain.
And that’s it! You’re done!

I obviously still need to work on the decorating part! Below are all of the “linkable” pieces I currently have displayed.
My uncle made the lamps as a wedding gift for Ryan and I, and I am considering painting them white and distressing the paint a bit. Lamp shades are also needed, obviously haha!
Here’s a few more fall pieces that I’m loving right now…
This looks so good!
