Can we talk about how BIG of a difference this modern return vent cover made in our hallway?! I had been searching for a good way to upgrade our original 90’s return vent cover, and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this one on Amazon. It’s extremely quick & easy to install – I did it during my kid’s afternoon nap!
Materials:
- Return vent cover from Amazon
- Touch up paint for the wall – as needed
Tools:
- Small prybar
- Drill or screwdriver
- Small hand sander (to refinish wall as needed)
Step 1: Remove Existing Return Cover
Each situation is different, so pay close attention to how your specific cover is attached. In my case, I first removed the grate. Then, I cut the caulk lines on all four edges of the frame with a utility knife. Finally, I used my prybar to remove the existing nails on both sides of the frame that were hammered into a stud.
You’ll probably want to clean up a bit after this step… if you’re like me, there will be 30 years of dust and gunk beneath that cover!!!
Step 2: Patch & Paint Wall As Needed
If you’re lucky, you can skip this step all together!! I had a bit of patchwork to do, so I sanded and painted as needed. I chose NOT to take the time to add drywall, and you can’t tell at all.
Quick tip: This return cover is paintable, so you can make it match your wall!
Step 3: Install the New Return Cover
Start by removing the metal bracket from the cover face. There is a spring loaded metal arch on the top side that allows you to easily pop the cover in and out of the metal bracket. Once you’ve removed the cover, screw the metal bracket into your wall studs on either side of the opening.
Once the metal bracket is installed, pop the cover back in, and that’s it! You’re DONE!!!
