How to Actually Enjoy Running

It’s officially FALL! Which means the weather’s cooling down, and the temperature is perfect for running. If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that running is a huge part of my life. I’ve gotten some DM’s asking why I like to run and how to enjoy running, so I thought I’d share some tricks I’ve implemented over the years.

My lunchtime run is my favorite part of my day! Let’s dive into why..

How to enjoy running:

  1. Take time to create a running playlist that you love. Here’s one of mine.
  2. Invest in cute + comfortable + practical running clothes. I literally only run in these shorts when it’s warm out. All of my favorite gear is linked here.
  3. Find a route that you absolutely love. I personally love water and open space, so I mainly run on trails that go through fields or by lakes.
  4. Get a good pair of running shoes & socks! (I feel like nobody really talks about socks lol) I currently run with these shoes for longer distances and these for shorter distances (3 miles or less)  These socks are great because they’re thin, and they don’t give me blisters.
  5. A good pair of headphones can make all the difference. You don’t want to be constantly adjusting your earbuds while you run (I’ve been there, it’s not fun!)
  6. Stay hydrated. Keep a Nalgene at your desk. Try to drink 2 full Nalgenes before lunch!
  7. Eat a small snack a half hour before you run. You’ll feel more energized! A handful of almonds is my go-to snack.
  8. Don’t be afraid to take supplements for longer runs. When I’m training for a half, I use Advocare’s O2 Gold dietary supplement for 6-7 mile plus runs. I personally take it because it helps my breathing during the run, and it helps with recovery once I’m done.
  9. Go at your own pace. It’s easy to compare yourself with others who run faster and longer. I live in Boulder, so the comparison game is real when it comes to endurance. My advice is to let go of that competitive nature if you’re just starting out – this is about YOU getting the best workout for YOUR body.
  10. Have fun. One of the reasons I run is because it’s fun and I feel free and like a kid again with no hindrances to worry about. All you’re doing is putting one foot in front of the other!

On another note, how awesome are these leggings?! It’s fun to wear something a little out there every now and then!

Have a great week <3

Honestly for me it has to be two things. One I love to run and meet new people. Some of my closest friends I wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for running. It also feels so good once you are done. There always seems to be room for improvement with running. Two my runs streak keeps me going. I have had to attempt it 3 times with the third time being successful. So I know if I stop that I will be at day 1 again. I don’t want to do that again.

That’s a good point, it does allow you to meet people you wouldn’t have met and experience things you wouldn’t have experienced. I also agree that it’s not fun to start over. I hate it when I can’t run as fast as I normally do if I take a week off or something like that. The feeling of the “runner’s high” will never get old! You definitely motivate me because you run every single day. Over 652 days in a row is an amazing accomplishment!!! And all while being a mom. How do you find the time to run while being a mom? Specifically, how do you fit your long runs in?

I normally run in the mornings while the kids are in school. Long runs are on the weekends while everyone is still sleeping with the local run group if I can make it work. If not, I have a day through the week that I pick to do my long runs. Tomorrow morning will be day 652. I hated starting over since this was the third time I have started it and I just keep it going. I appreciate the kind words. There are some days I lack the motivation but still do it. B

I actually meant to say that it is 662 with tomorrow’s run. I have been bad about writing the days now on social media. Lol I am fixing to head to bed so that explains why I didn’t say the actual day. I have an app that helps me keep up with the days.

Wow that takes a lot of dedication and commitment. I hope I can be like you when I’m a mom and make time for both running and my family. Keep up the good work, I love following along!

I am sure you will find the time for it. It is a matter of prioritizing. It can be challenging but since the kids are older, I have had them join me on runs as well. It has become a family event.
