Hey hey! Did you catch my $500 bathroom remodel? I’m slowly going through every room in our fixer upper and bringing it out of it’s 90’s stupor… and I’m doing my best to stick to a minimal budget.
A great budget friendly way to upgrade your bathroom is to simply paint the vanity. Curious how to paint cabinets? I was too! So I read a bunch of ‘how-to’ guides before I got started, and I wanted to share what I learned with you here! I also saved the full process on my instagram highlight called “bathroom reno,” so you can catch up there too.
After I painted the bathroom walls, installed new flooring, and replaced the light fixture and the mirror, it was time to decide on a vanity paint color. The 90’s wood just wasn’t cutting it for me.
What you’ll need:
- 220 grit sanding block
- Paint (I used retreat by Sherwin Williams in an eggshell finish)
- high density foam roller
- tack cloths
- drill for removing hardware / hinges
- new hardware (I used these knobs)

Sand the vanity
The first thing you’ll want to do is remove the cabinet doors and drawers. Also, remove the hinges so you don’t have to paint around them. Then take your fine sanding block and lightly sand each surface. You just want to scuff it up enough so that the paint doesn’t chip. This is a VERY important step.. the paint WILL chip if you don’t sand first!
Paint the vanity
After sanding, wipe with a tack cloth and it’s time to paint. I used Retreat by Sherwin Williams and I really love it. It’s a beautiful neutral green. Here’s how I painted my cabinets:
- Use a paintbrush for your first coat
- After the paint dries, lightly sand out the brushstrokes with your fine sanding block
- Use a high density foam roller for the second coat
This process worked great for me! The paintbrush allowed me to get into the grooves, and the high density foam roller gave the cabinets a perfectly smooth finish.
After your second coat dries, reattach all your doors and cabinets, add the hardware, and you’re DONE!
What do you think?! I am so thrilled with how it turned out. 🙂 I think my guests will by much happier now haha!
xoxo
