My Tips for How to Hang Curtains

tips on how to hang curtains, hang curtains high and wide, affordable curtains

If there’s something I’ve done a lot of over the past year, it’s hang curtains! When we bought our fixer upper, the window coverings were old blinds from the 90s that needed updating. Its truly wild to me how just adding curtains can completely change the feeling of a room. Since I’ve done it in pretty much every room of this home, I wanted to share my tips on how to hang curtains!

Tip 1: Hang them High & Wide

Gosh does curtain placement make a huge difference in the appearance of a room! Check out the two images below where I demonstrate this for you. The wall looks so much bigger, lighter, and brighter with the curtains hung high and wide.

Tip 2: Use a Laser Level to Ensure Consistency

A laser level will make your life so much easier.. not only for this project, but for all DIYs! It’ll help ensure that your mounts are level (duh) and equally spaced. Trust me, it makes the process a million times easier!

Tip 3: Install Drywall Anchors to Prevent Tear Out

When we first moved into this home, I made the mistake of hanging heavy blackout curtains WITHOUT installing drywall anchors. They ripped right out of the wall after a couple weeks. Save yourself some time and do it right the first time!

Tip 4: Use Light and Bright Textiles to Make the Space Feel Airier

I will always opt for an airy, light filtering curtain where possible. In the nurseries, I chose to install a memory trained blackout curtain (memory trained curtains look more formal), yet I chose a lighter color (beige white) to keep the feel of the room airy and bright.

You can see the effects of the curtains below in our study as well. Yes, the entire room was renovated, but the textile placement on the wall does so much for the overall feel of the room!
