Hallway Upgrade – I Painted our Interior Doors! Full Tutorial!

Well, I finally pulled the trigger on something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.. I painted the interior doors in our hallway a color other than white!! I can’t wait for you to see the before and after. It’s WILD how much a little paint can elevate your space.

I saved the whole process to my Instagram stories – follow me there for more budget friendly DIYs like this!

Painting Supplies:

Below you can see just how much of a difference painting the doors made! The white doors with gold hardware is just not my style. I’ve been dying to try out Chantilly Lace on my walls, and I’m really happy with the color. It’s a true white that doesn’t pull yellow at all, which was my fear.

Chelsea Gray by BM is a gorgeous accent color! I was worried it would pull too warm for my taste, but it’s a great neutral gray and I really like how it looks with Chantilly Lace.

Step 1: Paint the walls

Paint the walls first so that you can decide on a door color! You want to make sure you have your color scheme down before jumping into painting the doors. 🙂

Step 2: Prep, Prime & Paint the Doors

First, remove your doorknobs. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it makes painting so much easier!

I actually didn’t prime our upstairs doors, and we have no chipping yet! (I’m updating this post one year later and can verify that we still have no chipping.) However, to be safe, especially in higher traffic areas, I would recommend using a primer.

After you’ve primed, use your angle brush to cut into the grooves in your doors. Then, immediately follow with a foam roller to eliminate any brush strokes. I needed about 2 coats of paint on these doors.

Quick tip: Hold a scrap piece of cardboard under door to easily prevent paint from getting on your floor!

Step 3: Reinstall Doorknobs and Clean Up Hinges

Wipe your hinges with a baby wipe to remove any paint (baby wipes have so many uses!!! lol), reinstall your doorknobs after the paint has dried, and you’re done!!

Wall Decor

  • Wall Mounted Plants: Amazon

Another upgrade I made to this hallway was just adding wall decor. I wanted this landing to feel like US and really be a welcoming space when we walk upstairs. I chose to hang a gallery wall on the largest wall. It came with a hanging template, which made it so EASY to hang!
